News Corp is an American news organization based out of New York. Their aim is to deliver engaging and authoritative news content to the masses.
News Corp, one of the top news companies, was breached earlier this winter. The attack stings especially harshly as it comes on the heels of an initial attack against the company in 2020. It appears a foreign government, possibly the Chinese government, is responsible for the attack. Nation-states regularly target companies like News Corp as those organizations own servers containing potentially valuable information.
Digital thieves entered News Corp's systems to access email messages. However, the hackers have not been identified. Furthermore, the digital forensics professionals who analyzed the attack did not find clues indicating how it occurred.
There have been two breaches in recent years. The first was February 2020, and the most recent was January through February 2022.
News Corp indicates customer data was not accessed in the breach. However, the news organization's journalists were compromised. The thieves stole information from journalists' email accounts, likely in an attempt to obtain inside information, steal identities and engage in other criminal activity.
The journalists affected by the attack are based in the United States and the United Kingdom. Compromised news organizations include News Corp's headquarters, News UK, Dow Jones, New York Post, and News Technology Services.
The attack breached email content. However, the exact number of emails accessed in the breach was not revealed. News Corp representatives indicate the attack compromised a “limited” number of accounts. To read more about the breach, read our blog Cyber Criminals Strike News Corp.
