Mattax Neu Prater Breach - December 4, 2021
Date: December, 2021Mattax Neu Prater Eye Center is a chain of eye doctors’ offices around southern Missouri. It was founded in 1999 as a complete eye care center, with its doctors performing everything from routine eye exams to cataract surgery.
What Was the Breach?
The breach was a “third party data security incident [that] may have resulted in unauthorized access to the sensitive personal information of some of our patients.” The hacker was said to have deleted entire databases before the ECL discovered and stopped the breach.
How Did the Breach Occur?
This particular breach resulted from a data breach on an electronic record-keeping platform called "myCare Integrity." This was provided to Mattax Neu Prater by the Eye Care Leaders (ECL), a "practice performance company." The ECL provides myCare Integrity to multiple businesses, Mattax Neu Prater said in a statement. “This incident has affected eye care practices across the country, and is not specific to Mattax Neu Prater.”

Mattax Neu Prater sent mail to anyone whose information may have been a part of the breach. The unfortunate part is that the office didn't begin to alert patients of the breach until June 2022, despite the breach having occurred in December 2021.
How Many Files Does the Breach Affect?
According to HIPAA, 92,361 individuals were affected by this breach. Mattax Neu Prater also said that the information that may have been accessed included but was not limited to the patients' names, social security numbers, and insurance information.
