Elbit Systems of America is an international company that focuses on defense electronics. As of 2021, the Iran-based company employed over 17,000 people.
The breach was an attack by the ransomware group Black Basta. Black Basta is an infamous group that rose to popularity in early 2022 after hacking the American Dental Association. They allowed 96 hours for the ADA to pay the ransom before posting the stolen data onto their TOR leak site. It would be safe to assume that they did the same to Elbit.
The breach was a ransomware attack. Black Basta is known for their particular “brand” of ransomware, despite only rising to prominence recently. They hack the servers, encrypt the files, and refuse to relinquish the data to the owners until the ransom is paid.
This breach took place and was discovered on June 8th, 2022.
The breach impacts 369 employees, though Elbit is warning all its employees to remain safe and cautious. It has offered one year of "IDX, single bureau credit monitoring, CyberScan dark web monitoring, fully managed identity recovery services, and $1 million in identity theft insurance coverage" to all affected employees.
When the hackers entered the system, they were only able to access the files of a small percentage of employee files. No customers or clientele had any information accessed in the breach.
