Alameda Health System Breach - May 2020 and March 2022

Alameda Health System, formerly known as Alameda County Medical Center, is based in Oakland, California. It operates out of five hospitals; Alameda Hospital, San Leandro Hospital, Fairmont Hospital, John George Psychiatric Hospital, and Highland Hospital.

What Was the Breach?

The breach was a leak of thousands of patients’ personal information. The hacker accessed social security numbers, names, patient IDs, birth dates, driver’s license numbers, and health insurance information.

How Did the Breach Occur?

The breach was most likely a phishing attack, discovered when the hospital noted suspicious activity in its employee emails. It immediately began an investigation and found the affected information pertained to tens of thousands of systems. The hospital started sending out notification letters on June 24th, 2022.
