Rockstar Gaming's Grand Theft Auto VI, with an expected release sometime during or after 2024, had over fifty minutes' worth of in-game footage, codes, and data leaked. The hacker also took responsibility for the attack on Uber a week before.
The hacker said they obtained the videos and footage by taking the password to a Rockstar official's Slack account. They then logged into a Grand Theft Auto Forum under the username "teapotuberhacker" and released the footage into the chat. Most people on the site called teapotuberhacker's bluff, calling them and the videos fake until they began releasing footage and screenshots. Many people said the quality was so high there was no chance it was fake.
The breach occurred on Monday, September 19th, 2022.
The breach impacts Rockstar Gaming and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. It's been said to be one of the biggest breaches in video game history, and Take-Two stocks have been dropping since the attack, down by 3.3 percent on Monday.
From what Rockstar has released, some unfinished game footage was accessed, downloaded, and released by the hacker, along with specific access and cheat codes. The hacker said they "could leak more data soon, GTA 5 and 6 source code and assets, GTA 6 testing build." Take-Two and Rockstar Gaming are not likely to lose any revenue due to the leak; if anything, the leak just created more hype and excitement for the game’s eventual release.
