Acorda Therapeutics is a publicly traded biotech company based out of New York. It was founded in 1995 and has always had a focus on neuro treatment options for ailments like MS, Parkinson’s, and migraines.
Acorda Therapeutics has admitted to a data breach. The company acknowledged the breach this summer though the data theft appears to have occurred last winter. The breach is notable as it exposed Acorda Therapeutics' patients' medical information and other sensitive details. Only time will tell what becomes of the stolen data. Here’s a brief recap of the Acorda Therapeutics hack.
Acorda representatives indicate the breach centered on illegal patient data access and theft. The digital miscreants responsible for the attack accessed Acorda employee emails, opening up a treasure trove of highly sensitive and valuable information about patients, medical insurers, and more.
The threat actors stole the full names, birthdates, patient health information, medical records numbers, and other sensitive patient information. The stolen data is almost certain to be listed for sale on obscure hacking message boards and other black market exchanges on the dark web.
This breach occurred from December 2020 to January 2021.
The breach affects Acorda as well as its patients. The company filed a formal notice of the digital breach in the second week of June. The notice was followed by data breach correspondence sent to all patients potentially impacted by the online ambush.
The breach impacts 500+ Acorda Therapeutics patients. The leaked data stemming from the hack differs by patient. Some patients' prescription medication details were exposed. Others' financial account details were stolen. In some cases, hackers stole patients' insurance provider information, cost of treatment information, and other valuable details.
