Cybersecurity Weekly Recap March 4

The world is on edge as the war continues in Eastern Europe. There is a prevailing sentiment that the current boots-on-the-ground war will eventually transition to a cyberwar in which Russian hackers inflict digital pain on the United States, Ukraine, and countries that comprise NATO. However, at the moment, cyber-attacks related to the war between the two Eastern European countries have been limited. Let's take a look at some of the most notable digital attacks publicized in the week gone by.

Toyota Cyber-Attack

Toyota suspended its automotive production operations in Japan in the wake of a cyber-attack. Though Toyota's digital security specialists are unsure if Russian hackers are behind the attack, the suspicion is that the Eastern European nation levied the attack after Japan and its allies blocked off the totalitarian country from accessing financial institutions through the SWIFT financial payment network. The digital attack halted the production of 13,000 Toyota automobiles. All in all, 14 automotive production plants have been temporarily shuttered.

TCP Middlebox DDoS Attacks

Digital miscreants are using TCP Middlebox Reflection to levy DDoS attacks, meaning the denial of service attacks. This strategy is a component of an overarching amplification technique that wasn't identified until the start of the new year.

TCP Middlebox Reflection attacks exploit firewall vulnerabilities in addition to systems that provide content filtering to steer TCP traffic to specific computers, ultimately spurring a DDoS attack. The end result of the attack is censorship and content filtering made possible through middleboxes.

TrickBot

TrickBot, a form of malware, is garnering attention from cyber security professionals as its AnchorDNS has been bolstered in the context of AnchorMail. The AnchorDNS is used as a covert backdoor means of access. This unique digital attack sends Conti ransomware to networks and computers. AnchorMail uses an email server to communicate by way of SMTP and IMPA protocols through TLS with the overarching aim of exploiting wealthy targets.

GitLab Details Released

Researchers recently revealed information pertaining to the GitLab digital security flaw. The DevOps open-source software has the potential to permit an unauthenticated, remote hacker to obtain user information. The flaw in question pertains to GitLab Enterprise and Community Editions 13.0 on up. Rapid7's Jake Baines noted several patches had been released, yet it is uncertain as to whether they will fully address the vulnerability resulting from an inadequate authentication check when conducting GitLab GraphQL API queries.

Remote hackers are using such vulnerabilities to gather the usernames, government names, and email addresses of GitLab users. The collected usernames are used in the transition to harsh "brute-force" style attacks ranging from credential stuffing to password spraying and password guessing.

NVIDIA Attack

NVIDIA, the world's top chipmaker, was hacked earlier this week. Digital criminals broke into the company's network, obtaining and subsequently leaking DLSS source code on the dark web. The hackers published a statement on the web to highlight their successful breach, noting they accessed NVIDIA systems for an entire week.

The hackers collected a terabyte of data, including firmware, drivers, and schematics. The criminals insist they will take action unless NVIDIA contacts them and meets their demands. However, NVIDIA representatives have stated they have no evidence of the deployment of ransomware. The company's spokesperson also stated that the digital attack is unrelated to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
